A multi-language manual for migrants
There are 16 federal states in Germany, as well as 16 different school systems: education in Germany can seem like a tangled mess, and not only for parents with a history of migration.
In schools of general education in Lower Saxony, there are many students with non-German origins. In this manual, we want to make the Lower Saxony school system more understandable for you as parents. This manual can be found in 14 other languages.
The schools in Germany and in Lower Saxony have the duty to continually develop the character of students after kindergarten. Therefore, not only do the students learn to read, write, and calculate, but also (among other skills) to respect cultural and religious values as well as develop social relations to people with varied backgrounds. In addition, the schools will prepare the students for their future professional lives.
In this manual, we would like to extensively explain to you the goals, as well as the style and the peculiarities, of schools in Lower Saxony. Additionally, we will describe which rights and obligations you have as parents.
With this manual, we hope to support you and your child to the best of our abilities during his or her time in school.
